Phyllis J. Betman, 58, an accounting technician at Walter Reed Hospital since the mid-1960s, died Monday in a hospital in Salisbury, Md., after a heart attack. She was vacationing in Ocean City when she was stricken.
Mrs. Betman began her government career as a payroll clerk with the Navy Department in 1960. She worked there until transferring to Walter Reed.
She was a native of Fairview, W.Va., and a graduate of Mountain State Business College in Parkersburg, W.Va. She first came to the Washington area in 1943. Mrs. Betman served in the Women's Army Corps in Florida during World War II.
A longtime resident of suburban Maryland, she and her husband, Joseph, lived in Hyattsville.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Betman's survivors include a daughter, Nancy Payne of Owings, Md.; four sons, David A., of Washington, Danny N., of Edmonston, Md., Douglas M., of Adelphi, and Donald P., of Greenbelt; her mother, Frieda Shriver of Fairmont, W.Va.; a brother, James D., of Fairview, W.Va.; five sisters, Wilda Fiel of Woodbridge, Sue Woods of Oakton, Jerry Simons, of Fairview, Noretta Black of Chesterfield, Va., and Joan Hurst of Gore, Okla., and seven grandchildren.
