Two Washington men were shot and seriously wounded at a Northeast intersection last night after being pulled from the pickup truck they were riding in by two armed men.
Police identified the victims as Edward A. Conley, 32, of 1230 Montello Ave. NE, the driver, and Vernon L. Heyward, 25, of 3570 13th St. NE. They were reported undergoing treatment early today in the intensive care unit at the Washington Hospital Center following surgery.
Police said Conley and Heyward and an unidentified woman in the truck with them were stopped at a stop sign at 13th and Downing streets NE about 7 p.m. when two men armed with pistols yanked open the doors of the truck and pulled the men outside.
Conley and Heyward apparently knew the men, police said, and began arguing with them. The woman was allowed to run away, and she did, she told police, she heard several shots and took cover between two parked cars.
When police arrived on the scene minutes later, they found Conley lying in the street bleeding from bullet wounds to the abdomen and right leg. Heyward had been shot in the chest and abdomen and was slumped in the passenger seat.
Police said early this morning that they had made no arrests and had not yet determined a motive for the shooting.
