Fourteen southern Maryland students have been named winners of corporate-sponsored, four-year Merit Scholarships. They are among the first of three groups of Merit Scholars to be named in the 25th annual nationwide competition administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Winners of National Merit $1,000 Scholarships and college-sponsored, four-year Merit Scholarships will be announced later.

Corporate-sponsored scholarships went to Mary Katherine Carter, of Holton-Arms School, from IBM; Lawrence J. Davis, of Walt Whitman High School, from RCA; Thomas J. Karr, of Walt Whitman High School, from Dow Jones; Peter J. Shabecoff, of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, from New York Times Co.; Marybeth Lysons, of Frederick High School, from Bechtel Foundation; Sallie L. Vandling, of Seneca Valley High School, from IBM; John M. Petrone, of Walt Whitman High School, from IBM; Michael R. Schmitz, of Winston Churchill High School, from Combustion Engineering; Heather L. Dick, of Rockville High School, from Bendix Corp.; David S. Lalush, of Charles W. Woodward High School, from Bendix Corp.; Debra N. Nathanson, of Thomas S. Wootton High School, from IBM; Esther R. Ferington, of Seneca Valley High School, from Grace Foundation; John C. Smeltzer, of Northwood High School, from IBM; Katherine C. Tuttle, of Walt Whitman High School, from Metropolitan Life Foundation.
