Volunteers are needed by HOPE in Northern Virginia to help young women who are pregnant and need assistance.

The volunteers will talk by telephone with women undergoing a problem pregnancy, provide transportation to doctor's appointments and hospitals and help with office work. Professionals who have degrees in nursing, social services or allied services are also needed to work as counselors.

Training classes begin in Falls Church May 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. and will meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening through May 29. For information, call 536-2020.

The Alexandria Community Mental Health Center is recruiting volunteers to assist its profesional staff in a number of areas.

The Adult Day Treatment Program needs persons who can teach arts and crafts, sewing, pottery, carpentry, art, ceramics or cooking, and who can participate in social activity.

Volunteers are also needed to make home visits to elderly shut-ins or lead discussion groups on various topics at outreach centers in several area of the city. Discussion group leaders should have special interests or experience in being single parents, widows or widowers, parents of adolescents for step-parents. Clerical personnel are also needed.
