Opal Wright Abbe, 79, a resident of Rockville since 1941 who was active in community and civic organizations, died of cancer Sunday at the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital of Rockville.

Mrs. Abbe was a member of The League of Women Voters, the NAACP, and the Rockville Citizens for Good Government, She was an honorary life member of both the Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers and the Rockville Little Theater.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Rockville and its St. Ann's Guild.

Mrs. Abbe was a native of Claypool, Ind. She was a 1925 graduate of the University of Cincinnati where she earned a bachelor's degree in nursing.

She worked as a public health nurse in Cininnati and a Red Cross nurse in Goshen, Ind., and lived in Ohio, Indiana, and Connecticut before coming to this area.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Leslie Morgan Abbe of Rockville; two sons, Timothy W., of Gaithersburg, and Jonathan T., of Webster, N.Y.; two daughters, Jacqueline A. Austin of Stevensville, Md.; and Judith A Corse of Dickerson, Md.; two sisters, Dorothy W. Crumrine of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Thelma W. Hippensteel of Huntington, Ind.; 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Christ Episcopal Church in Rockville or the American Cancer Society.
