Mark Seitz, 16, a lifelong resident of Northern Virginia, died Monday in the University of Kentucky Hospital as a result of injuries he had sustained in a fall on April 21.
Mark was a student at the Oneida Institute, a private secondary school in Oneida, Ky., at the time of his death.
Clay County, Ky. police said that on April 21 students were jumping from the balcony rail of the school's swimming pool into the pool. Seitz was on top of the rail when he slipped, fell 15 feet, and struck his head on the concrete edge of the pool. The police have ruled that his death was accidental.
Seitz was a native of Fairfax County and a resident of Vienna. He was a graduate of both Cedar Lane Elementary School and Henry David Thoreau Intermediate School, both in Vienna, and was attending Oakton High School there before transferring to the Oneida Institute. As a freshman, he had played junior varsity soccer at Oakton.
Survivors include his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Seitz, a brother, J. Craig, and a sister, April, all of Vienna, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Comes of Wilmore, Ky., and Katherine Seitz of Centerville, Ohio.
