Two Washington-area residents were killed and four others injured -- two critically -- in separate accidents Friday night and yesterday afternoon, police in Fairfax and Montgomery counties reported.
Dean Soto, 17, identified by a friend of the family as a starter for the soccor team at Thomas Jefferson High School in Fairfax, was a passenger in a car that struck a parked school bus on East Anderson Road late Friday, police said.
Soto died of head injuries, about 3 a.m. yesterday at Fairfax Hospital.
Soto, an unidentified 17-year-old and 16-year-old Leslie Carver were reportedly returning home from the Northern Virginia AAA Regional soccor finals when the accident occurred.
Fairfax police said they have not determined a reason for the crash, but said the unidentified youth may be charged in connection with the crash. The two other occupants of the car escpaed serious injury, police said.
In the second fatality, police said 81-year-old William Russell Phickstun, of 7803 Marbury Rd., Bethesda, was traveling northbound on Viers Mill Road when he attempted a left-hand turn into the Parklawn Cemetery. Phickstun died at the scene after his car collided with a southbound vehicle driven by 19-year-old Robert Asaad Rizik, 10851 Amherst Drive, Wheaton.
Phickstun's 83-year-old wife, Maybelle, and Rizik were both admitted to Suburban Hospital where they remained in critical but stable condition last night.
An investigation into the cause of the accident was continuing, police said.
