Christopher Scott (Scotty) McCullough, 17, who finished his junior year at Gonzaga College High School in Washington this spring, died May 24 in a hospital in Warrenton, Va., as a result of injuries he sustained in a hiking accident earlier that day.

Park Rangers said that Mr. McCullough had been hiking on the Big Devil Stairs Trail in the Shenandoah National Forest when he lost his footing on a ledge and fell 20 feet to the rocks below.

He was taken by a rescue squad to the Fauquier County Hospital in Warrenton where he died later that day, Park Rangers said.

Mr. McCullough was born in Washington and was a resident of Seat Pleasant. He was a Junior Naturalist and member of the Trail Club at the Clearwater Nature Center in Clinton, Md. He enjoyed hiking, camping, fishing and hunting.

He had attended St. Margaret's Grade School in Seat Pleasant and Saint Anselm's Abbey School in Washington before entering Gonzaga.

Survivors include his parents, Maryland Circuit Court Judge and Mrs. William H. McCullough, and a sister, Mary Beth McCullough, all of Seat Pleasant; another sister, Aimee McCullough, of Union City, N.J.; a brother, William H. Jr., of Proctor, Vt.; a grandmother, Edith McCullough of Spartanburg, S.C., and a grandfather, George Wagner of Bayonne, N.J.
