The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently selected its high school senior semi finalists. The 15,000 semifinalist represent the top half of one percent of the nation's high school senior classes.
Over one million students enrolled in appoximately 18,000 secondary schools nationwide entered the 1981 Merit Program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT in 1979, when most were juniors. The semifinalists will be identified to colleges and universities to increase their chances of admission. i
The semifinalists must go through an additional selection process, after which approximately 14,000 finalists will be notified next February that they are competing for about 4,500 Merit Scholarships to be awarded next spring.
