A man was found yesterday slain with an ax in a house in the 7200 block of Calvert Street, Annandale. A suspect was arrested and charged with murder several hours later.
Fairfax County police withheld the identity of the dead man, described as a 49-year-old resident of the house, pending notification of relatives.
He apparently had been slain on Sunday with several blows of an ax to the upper part of his body, police said.
The body was found about 2 p.m. yesterday after police were called by a neighbor. Police would not disclose the nature of the call. The body was alone in the house at the foot of the cellar steps leading to an outside door, according to police.
Arrested last night in Falls Church and charged with murder was Thomas M. Boyles, 36, who is unemployed and also lived in the house.
Boyles was held under $25,000 bond.
A neighbor who said he saw the body being removed from the house said it was that of the house's owner. The neighbor said the victim lived in the house alone until recently, when he took a boarder.
The neighbor also said he saw police removing an ax from the scene and that the dead man's truck was missing from the driveway.
Police refused last night to comment on a motive for the slaying.
