Federal and area government offices in the Washington metropolitan area will be closed Monday, except those that provide emergency services, in observance of Columbus Day. Schools in the District and in Northern Virginia will be closed, but those in Maryland's Montgomery and Prince George's counties will be open.
Most retailers will maintain normal weekday hours and in some cases hours will be extended, according to the Greater Washington Board of Trade. Most financial institutions will be closed.
All liquor stores in Virginia and Montgomery County will be closed. Stores selling alcoholic beverages in the District and Prince George's County are not required to close.
Metrobuses will operate on a Saturday schedule as will metrorail, which will run from 8 a.m. to midnight. Sunday parking regulations will be in effect in the District.
Trash collections normally scheduled for Monday in Washington will be made on Tuesday, and those scheduled for Tuesday will be made Wednesday. Supercan test collection routes will be operated on normal schedules.
Trash collection in Virginia and Maryland will be made on regular schedules, except in Falls Church where there will be no pick up on Monday. Refuse will be collected there Tuesday.
All public libraries will be closed in the area except in Prince George's, where facilities will be open during regular hours.
