A 19-year-old Northwest Washington man was shot in the ankle yesterday when another youth attempted to rob a dice game being played on the grounds of Roosevelt High School, D.C. police reported.

Police said that shortly before noon, about 10 youths, none of whom are students, were playing dice on the grounds of the Northwest Washington high school when an argument between several of the players developed. One of the players, known to police as "Reds," left the game and returned a short time later, wearing a ski mask and armed with a handgun, demanding the money he had lost in the game.

Another argument ensued, and two shots were fired, one hitting Van Reed, of 6400 7th St. NW, in the ankle. The gunman fled, and several of Reed's friends carried him to the street, where they were picked up by several others in a car.

Heading toward Washington Hospital Center, the car the youths were riding in was involved in a three-car collision. Reed, who was cut and bruised in the accident, was taken by ambulance to the Hospital Center, where he was listed in good condition. No one was injured seriously in the accident.

No arrests have been made, the police said.
