Elizabeth Utz Boyd, 77, a Washington resident for almost 50 years who was active in gardening and service organizations, died Tuesday at the Washington Hospital Center. She had a stroke.

Mrs. Boyd was born in Appleton, Wis., and graduated from the Milwaukee Downer Seminary. She studied dancing with the noted dancers Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn and became a member of their dance , group Denishawn. She appeared in a number of Broadway productions with this and other groups.

She moved to Washington following her marriage in 1932 to Crosby N. Boyd, a former president and chairman of the board of The Washington Star newspaper. Mrs. Boyd was a member of the Junior League of Washington, the Trowel Club of Washington and the Garden Club of America. She also was a member of the Women's Board of the Columbia Hospital for Women and the Women's Advisory Board of the Salvation Army. She was a former member of the Sulgrave Club.

Mrs. Boyd's survivors include her husband, of Washington; a son, Crosby Noyes Boyd Jr., of Rockville; two daughters, Elizabeth Noyes Boyd of New York City and Lake Placid, N.Y., and Susan A. Boyd of Washington, and three grandchildren .
