This Saturday, Nov. 1, is the final day that Northern Virginians can cast absentee ballots in person for the general election next Tuesday, and today is the deadline for requesting mail-in absentee ballots.
Elections officials urge all voters who believe they may be away from home on election day to vote absentee. You must be a registered voter (registration in Virginia ended Oct. 4) and must state why you cannot be at the polls Tuesday.
Under Virgina law, only four groups of voters can cast absentee ballots by mail: military personnel and their spouses, students and their spouses, citizens living overseas and persons who cannot get to the polls because of illness.
To cast a mail-in ballot, you must request an application form from your local election board by today. If you are a qualified voter, a ballot will be sent to you. It must be returned by the time polls close at 7 p.m. Tuesday. s
