Two persons were killed in separate shooting incidents within a half hour of each other Monday night, D.C. police reported. A suspect in one incident turned himself into police.
In that case, homicide detectives said they charged Jose Rafael Sevilla, 35, of the 2900 block of Sherman Avenue NW with the slaying of Carlos Chavez, 30, of the 3000 block of 18th Street NW.
Shortly before midnight Monday, police found Chavez lying in an alley at 2503 Champlain St. NW. He had been shot once in the head. Chavez was taken to Washington Hospital Center where he died a short time later. Meanwhile, Sevilla turned himself into 3rd District police headquarters. Sevilla, who said he was employed as a cook, declined to give a motive in the slaying, police said. He was charged with murder. Officers said the dead man had told neighbors he was from Houston, Tex.
In the other slaying, police said Shelly Hugh Moye Jr., 18, of the 1800 block of Newton Street NW, was found shortly before midnight in an alley at 1109 11th St. NW. Moye, who had been shot once in the head, died at Washington Hospital Center.
Officials said they had no suspects or motive in the second slaying.
