A 15-year-old Northeast Washington youth was shot and killed yesterday during a dispute with a friend at a service station in one of three unrelated fatal shootings that occurred in Washington during the day.
A police homicide detective said the dispute at the Deane Avenue Shell Station, 4321 Burroughs Ave. NE. that led to the death of Fitzgerald M. Giles, 15, of 4693 Benning Rd., dapparently stemmed from horseplay.
Police said they arrested Dwight Newsome, 19, of 1501 27th St. SE at the service station where he worked and charged him with homicide in Giles' death.
In an incident at the Terrace Cleaners, at 3427 Benning Rd., police said a part-time employe was preparing to open for business about 7:30 a.m. when he was confronted by a would-be robber with a shotgun. A passerby alerted police, and a 5th District police officer, Julia Field, arrived and ordered the man to drop the gun, police said.
They said that after dropping the gun, the man, who had not been identified last night, struggled with the officer and grabbed for her holstered revolver.
Fearing for the officer's safety, police said, the employe picked up the shotgun and fired.
The intruder was pronounced dead at D.C. General Hospital two hours later. Two other men are being sought in the incident. No charges were placed against the employee, whom police declined to identify.
In the third incident, Tyrone Reese, 23, of 1913 Gales St. Ne. was found fatally wounded about 2 a.m. in a playground at 20th Street and Benning Road NE after being shot in the left side.
Police arrested James Coles, 40, of 2029 Benning Rd. NE, and charged him with homicide.
