D.W. Summerford, 72, who had worked in hotel and property management in Washington for 40 years before retiring in 1968, died Friday at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center in Cambridge, Md., after a stroke. He had been a patient at the Center since 1970.
Mr. Summerford was a manager with the old Wardman Park Hotel, McLean Gardens apartment complex, and the Carillon House. He spent his last six years as a property manager with Shannon & Luchs before retiring. He was president of the Property Managers Association in 1964.
He was a member of the Benjamin B. French Masonic Lodge No. 15, and had been a member of the Almas Temple since 1953. He was a founder of the Georgetown Kiwanis Club.
He was a native of Lilly, Ga., and came to Washington in the late 1920s.He retired to Ocean City, Md., in January 1970 and entered the Hospital Center in Cambridge later that year.
Survivors include his wife, the former Mildred Morris, of Ocean City; a stepson, Robert H. Morris, also of Ocean City; two sisters, Martha Hogsett and Myrtle Marsh both of Moultrie, Ga., and two half-brothers, Joseph Summerford of Lilly, and Leslie Summerford of Albany, Ga.
