Government -- State and federal offices will be closed in the District, Maryland and Virginia tomorrow, New Year's Day. State offices in Virginia also will be closed Friday, Jan. 2. All city and county offices in the District, Northern Virginia and in Prince George's and Montgomery counties will be closed tomorrow.
Banks -- All banks in the Washington metropolitan area will be closed tomorrow but will be open for business Friday.
Mail -- There will no regular postal service tomorrow.
Liquor -- In Virginia, ABC liquor stores will be open until 6 p.m. today, New Year's Eve, closed New Year's Day and open until 6 p.m. Friday. In the District, liquor stores are not required to close. In Montgomery County, liquors stores will be closed tomorrow. In Prince George's County, liquor stores may operate on regular schedules.
Shops -- Retail stores in the area are not required to close on the holiday. Those whose managements prefer to do so will be open tomorrow.
Transportation -- Metrobuses and Metrorail will operate tomorrow on a Sunday schedule. Rush-hour traffic regulations will not be in effect tomorrow and parking meter payments will not be required.
Schools -- All schools will remain closed in the Washington area. Most schools will resume normal schedules Monday, Jan. 5.
District of Columbia -- There will be no trash pickups tomorrow. All pickups normally scheduled for Thursdays will be made today. Christmas trees will be picked up at the collection point on a person's second collection day beginning next week. Residents using supercan trash collection will have service as usual. Trees also may be taken to the disposal site at the Fort Toten Transfer Station, 4900 Bates Dr. NE from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Libraries and courts in the District will be closed tomorrow, but will be open Jan. 2.
Northern Virginia -- In Fairfax County, libraries and courts will be closed tomorrow. Trash collections will be made on regular schedules. Christmas trees will be collected Jan. 5 through 9 at regular pickup sites. Fairfax City will maintain regular schedules of trash pickups. In Falls Church, there will be no trash pickups tomorrow. Pickups will be made Monday instead. Courts will be closed tomorrow and Friday. In Arlington, regular Thursday trash collections will be made today. Christmas trees will be picked up during regular collections. Juvenile-Domestic Relations Court and General District Court will be closed tomorrow and Friday Circuit Court, however, will be closed tomorrow, but will be open Friday. Libraries in Arlington will be closed tomorrow. In Alexandria, libraries and courts will be closed tomorrow. Trash will be collected as regularly scheduled. Christmas trees will be picked up with regular collections, but all trees should be cut so pieces do not exceed 4 feet in length.
Maryland -- In Prince George's County, libraries will close at 5 p.m. today and remain closed all day tomorrow and will be open in the afternoon Friday. Courts will be closed tomorrow. There will be no trash collections tomorrow. Pickups will be made Monday, Jan. 5. Christmas trees can be left at pickup sites on a regular collection day. In Montgomery County, all libraries and courts will be closed tomorrow. Trash collections scheduled for Thursday will be made on the next regular collection day. Christmas trees should be taken to the nearest elementary school before noon Saturday, Jan. 3, and Sunday, Jan. 4, for disposal.
