The D.C. government maintains several emergency shelters that provide meals, clothing and a place to stay for homeless persons. Following is a list of city-operated and other community-based shelters for adults. For more information, call 727-0845.

Emergency Family Shelter No. 1 -- 1531 P St. NW, 673-7694. Provides assistance until families can be placed in permanent housing.

Blair Shelter -- 7th and I streets NE, 727-3934. City-operated shelter for destitute men.

The Pierce School -- 14th and G streets NE, 727-6899. City-operated shelter for destitute men.

House of Ruth -- 10th and G streets NW, 547-2600. Offers emergency temporary shelter for battered women and their children, and for homeless, destitute women; provides food, clothing and limited support services.

Deborah's Place -- 1327 N St. NW, 265-9837. Houses single women with no or minimal income; furnishes room, board, employment and outreach programs; accepts referrals.

Gospel Misson -- 810 5th St. NW, 842-1731. Serves transient, homeless men; offers two meals daily.

House of Imagene -- 1214 P St. NW, 797-7460. Serves battered women and their children, and provides food and shelter for the destitute.

Mt. Carmel Shelter -- 471 G St. NW, 289-6315. Provides temporary shelter for homeless women only; offers dinner and breakfast.

My Sister's Place -- 1010 Vermont Ave. NW, 526-5991. Temporary shelter for battered women and their children; operated by the Women's Legal Defese Fund.

Sarah's House -- 1335 N St. NW, 232-6167. A temporary winter shelter program for homeless women offered by the Luther Place Memorial Church; serves an evening meal and breakfast.

The Salvation Army -- 504 5th St. NW, 783-4058. Temporary shelter for single women or for women with children up to 10 years of age.

Traveler's Aid -- 1015 12th St. NW, 347-0101. Serves the transient or stranded traveler. Refers those in need to shelters or identifies hotel accommodations. The main purpose is to see that people return home or reach their destinations safely. The program maintains offices in Dulles and National airports and in the National Visitor's Center at Union Station.
