A 22 year-old Silver Spring woman was shot and killed in her home during a predawn robbery yesterday after three intruders claiming to have car trouble forced their way inside her house, Montgomery County Police reported.
Karen Louise Hackney was pronounced dead of multiple gun shot wounds to the head at her home in the 1300 block of Caddington Avenue where she had lived for the last 10 months with Samuel O'Neil Hughes, 32.
Hughes, also home at the time, was not injured.
Early last night, District Columbia police arrested Emmett Charles Brownm, 31, of no fixed address, in connection with the shooting. Brown was apprehended at the corner of 13th and Irving streets NW and charged with being a fugitive from justice on a murder warrant issued by Montgomery County Police.
Brown, who police said was an acquaintance of Hackney's, was being held last night in the District's central cellblock pending extradition to Montgomery County.
According to police, a man knocked on the front door of the couple's home shortly before 3 a.m. Hackney refused to answer, and Hughes went to the door and opened it.
Two more men appeared, brandishing guns, and the trio pushed their way inside the house. They tied the couple up on the floor of the family room without a struggle, and began removing household items, according to police.
Then before they fled, they fired "multiple" shots into Hackney. Hughes, who managed to free himself after the assailants left, was not hit.
"We don't know why she was shot," said Montgomery police spokesman Nancy Moses. "[The case] could go a whole lot of directions."
