Irene Irma Krance, 69, a retired Defense Department secretary who was active in a number of local organizations, died of a pulmonary ailment Feb. 4 at Arlington Hospital.

An Arlington County resident for 41 years, she had lived with her son, John P. Krance Jr., at his Arlington home for the last five years.

Mrs. Krance, who was born in Cromwell, Conn., was a government secretary for 30 years. She was assigned to the old War Department and other agencies before transferring to the Defense Department, from which she retired in 1972 after 25 years of service.

She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Arlington, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Knights of Columbus, the Order of the Sons of Italy in America and the Polich Club of Northern Virginia.She also was active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the American Association of Retired Persons and the Senior Citizens Day Center in Arlington.

Her husband, John P. Krance, a sales representative for local firms, died in 1970.

Besides her son, survivors include a brother, John C. Musso of Clinton, Conn.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the American Lung Association.
