One person was killed in a car accident and a pedestrian died after struck by a van in separate incidents yesterday, D.C. police reported.

Joel DePaul Portuguese, 24, of 300 Maliby Dr., Silver Spring, was killed about 1 a.m. when the car he was driving went out of control at Piney Branch Road and Eastern Avenue NW, struck a traffic island and crashed into a railroad overpass abutment, police reported. Two other persons in the car were treated for minor injuries at Washington Adventist Hospital and released.

Maxim Romanoff, 94, of 3822 Davis Pl. NW, was killed about 9:15 a.m. when he was struck by a van as he attempted to cross Calvert Street at Tunlaw Road, police said. The driver of the van, Bang Bui, 43, of 1722 Mark Mead Dr., Vienna, was charged with failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian, pending an investigation of the incident, according to police.

In a third accident, three person suffered serious injuries when the car in which they were riding went out of control on Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park and rammed a tree. Police identified the victims as Ivory Lindsey, Gilbert Scott and Richard Washington, but were not able to provide additional details.All were taken to the Washington Hospital Center, the investigators said.
