Russell Trent (Ty) McClary, 17, a sophomore at Lee High School in Springfield and a lifelong resident of Northern Virginia, died Tuesday in Alexandria Hospital of injuries he suffered in a traffic accident earlier that day.

Fairfax County police said Mr. McClary was driving a pickup truck on Hooes Road near Backlick Road in Fairfax County, when his vehicle ran off the right side of the road and overturned.

Mr. McClary was taken to Alexandria Hospital. His brother, Timothy Preston McClary, who was a passenger in the truck, was taken to Fairfax Hospital. A hospital spokesman said Timothy McClary is in good condition.

Police said the accident is under investigation.

Russell McClary was born in Alexandria and lived in Springfield. He was a member of Lee High School's 1979 divisional championship freshman football team. He worked part time at a Shell gasoline station near his home.

In addition to his brother, of Springfield, Mr. McClary's survivors include his parents, Kenneth F. and Jody Potter McClary, three other brothers, Kenneth Wayne, Roger Daryl, and Gary mcClary, all of Warrenton; two sisters, Jody Ann Baker of Springfield and Belinda Ann Kemper of Warrenton, and two grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Rodes, of Hampton, Va.
