Metro's plans to move the bus barn from South Capitol and M streets SE to New Jersey Avenue and I Street SE will be discussed at a 7:30 meeting tonight at St. Peter's Church, 3rd and C streets SE. Officials of the D.C. Department of Transportation and representatives of Advisory Neighborhood Commisions 6B and 2D will participate. ANC 6B, which opposes the move, has asked Metro to prepare an environmental impact statement and to consider other sites.
The ANC has asked the city to keep the First District Police Substation at 5th and E streets SE open and fully staffed. According to ANC Chairman Robert Donaldson, residents believe the station -- scheduled to be left with only a skeleton staff later this summer -- deters crime. The ANC wants to keep the station fully operational until a new police district is set up in Ward Six -- the only one of the city's eight wards that does not have a police headquarters. According to Donaldson, Mayor Barry, has indicated to him that he supports a police district for Ward Six.
The ANC has asked the City Council to name an alley and park between 11th and 12th streets and East Capitol Street and Independence Avenue SE after Richard Bruce Sladen, a recently deceased community activist.
