Two area men were killed over the weekend in unrelated traffic accidents in Prince George's County and in Fairfax County.
Franklin Dennis Newton, 28, of Capitol Heights, was killed at 10:45 p.m. Saturday when he lost control of his 1981 Suzuki motorcycle and skidded into a Ford pickup while traveling southbound on Livington Road in Accokeek.
Newton was thrown under the truck driven by James Henry Padgett on Oxon Hill, while his passenger on the cycle, Janice C. Proctor, 20, also of Capitol Heights, was thrown clear, Prince George's police said.
Proctor is in satisfactory condition at Southern Maryland Hospital. Officials said Padgett, 32, who was uninjured, tried to avoid the collision and that no charges have been filed against him.
John Dolph Avery, 39, of Annandale, Va., was killed when his 1968 Chevrolet convertible overturned yesterday morning on Fort Hunt Road near the intersection of Paul Springs Parkway in Fairfax County, Fairfax police said.
Avery was operating his vehicle at about 50 mph in the direction of Mount Vernon when he entered a curve, the car crossed the double yellow line, skidded off the roadway onto the gravel portion and then turned over, trapping Avery underneath, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
