Edward Jude Kunec, 20, a senior at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., and a resident of Falls Church, died Monday at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore from injuries received in a highway accident on July 12.
Maryland State Police said Mr. Kunec was a passenger in a car that was involved in a minor accident on U.S. 29 just outside the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia. He was standing behind the car in which he had been riding when he was struck by a third vehicle. He was taken to the University of Maryland Hospital, where he died last Monday. Police said charges of speeding, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated are pending against the driver of the car that struck Mr. Kunec.
Mr. Kunec, who was born in Washington, was a 1978 graduate of Bishop Dennis J. O'Connell High School in Arlington where he active in sporets and a member of the Key Club. At James Madison University, where he was about to begin his senior year, he majored in mathematics and planned a career in the computer field. He was a Big Brother and was active in the Catholic Campus Ministry.
Survivors include his parents, Edward and Marie Kunec, three sisters, Alice, Joan and Jancy Kunec, and one brother, David, all of Falls Church.
