Advisory Neighborhood Commission 7D is reviewing the draft final report of the consultant firm studying the revitalization of the Minnesota-Benning shopping area. Phase 1 of the report calls for upgrading stores at the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road NE at the expense of property owners or with Urban Development Action Grant (UDAG) funds. According to ANC Vice Chairman James Onley, some upgrading is already in progress. Several stores and the Senator Theatre are being renovated for fall occupancy, an IGA supermarket has opened in a former Safeway building and TrakAuto has opened in a renovated building formerly the site of Western Auto.

The ANC recently testified in favor of the District government's plan to use the former Downtowner minibuses in parts of the city not adequately served by buses. Minnesota-Benning residents requested service to D.C. General Hospital, the Hechinger Mall and the Minnesota-Benning shopping area. The ANC is preparing further testimony for a hearing scheduled for City Council chambers July 29 at 7:30 p.m.

The Lincoln Heights public housing project in Northeast and what can be done to rehabilitate it is a question under study by the ANC. Preliminary recommendations include improving management, razing areas that are badly deteriorated, and using students, prison inmates and tenants to make needed repairs to less deteriorated sections.
