Melvin Moore Wertz, 74, a retired paper chemist for the Government Printing Office and a Navy veteran of World War II, died of pneumonia Friday at George Washington University Hospital. He had diabetes.

Mr. Wertz worked for the GPO for 42 years before retiring in 1968 for reasons of health.

He was lifelong resident of this city and had lived at The Washington Home for the last seven years.

He attended George Washington University.

Mr. Wertz was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase and GPO American Legion Post No. 36. He was a past master of the Albert Pike Masonic Lodge No. 36 and a past patron of Trinity Chapter No. 33, Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include his wife, the former Ruthe Belle Johnson, whom he married in 1933, a son, Melvro J., and a daughter, Virginia Loryma, all of Washington; another daughter, Sara Jane Heynen of Arlington, and a brother, Hugh Slater Wertz of Jamesburg., N.J.

The family suggest that expresions of sympathy be in the form of contributions in his name to the Perpetual Memorial Fund at All Saints Episcopal Church, to The Washington Home or to the Infirmary Fund of the Masonic and Eastern Star Home, all in Washington.
