Two Washington residents were shot fatally and one was beaten to death in unrelated incidents that occurred in a period of less than four hours early yesterday morning, D.C. police reported.
In the first of the incidents, Richard Perry was shot in the head about 12:30 a.m. in a parking lot in the 3000 block of Stanton Road SE. Homicide detectives said they believed Perry had lived in Southeast Washington, but they had no exact address or age for him.
Perry was taken to Greater Southeast Community Hospital where he died at 8 o'clock last night.
Shortly after the shooting, police said they stopped a man who was running from the scene. Kent Powell, 23 was arrested, and before Perry died, was charged with assault with intent to kill, police said. They said a handgun was seized, but declined to give further details. No motive in the shooting was immediately determined, according to investigators.
In another incident in far Southeast, which occurred about two hours after the first, Arthur Lee Jones Jr., 34 was found in an alley in the 3000 block of Seventh Street. Police said he had been shot in the chest. Jones was pronounced dead at D.C. General Hospital.
No arrests have been made and police declined to release additional information about the shooting.
In the third incident, the body of Frank Morrisey Jr., 31, of 3504 13th St. NW was found in an alley behind the 3500 block of 11th Street NW, about two blocks from his home. He apparently had been beaten to death with a club, police said.
Homicide detectives said Morrisey's death followed an argument, but that they did not know what prompted the argument and had no suspect.
The killings brought the number of homicides in the city this year to at least 143.
