All U.S. and area county and city offices are closed today in observance of Columbus Day. Maryland state offices are closed, but Virginia state offices are open.

Schools: All schools in Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia are closed. Suburban Maryland schools are open.

Mail: There is no regular postal service. Special delivery and express mail deliveries will be made.

Liquor: Virginia's ABC liquor stores are open. Montgomery County's liquor dispensaries are closed. Stores in Prince George's County and the District of Columbia are not required to close.

Refuse: Regular Monday pickups will be made on Tuesday in D.C., Falls Church and Alexandria, and Tuesday collections will be made on Wednesday. In Falls Church, regular Wednesday collections also will be made on that day. In Alexandria, Wednesday pickups will be made on Thursday, and Thursday collections on Friday. The D.C. Supercan collections will be made on regularly scheduled days. Collections in all other areas will follow regular schedules.

Banks: All banks in Maryland are closed today. In Virginia, banks are open. Banks in D.C. have the option to close.

Libraries: All libraries in the metropolitan area, except those in Prince George's County, are closed.

Transportation: Metrobus and Metrorail are operating on Saturday schedules, with off-peak fares in effect all day. Metrorail will run four-car trains on all lines.

Parking: Parking meter payments must be made. Weekday parking restrictions are in effect, but general weekday traffic regulations are not.
