Votes of area members of Congress on key issues taken the week of Oct. 12, 1981.
Disapproval of AWACs Sales to Saudi Arabia. By a nearly 3-1 margin, the House approved a resolution to bar the sale of an arms package to Saudi Arabia that features the AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) radar planes.
The 301-111 vote represented House disapproval of the sale of the planes, along with the delivery of fuel tanks for Saudi F15 aircraft, 1,177 air-to-air missiles, and six to eight tanker aircraft.
According to a 1976 amendment to the Arms Export Control Act, both houses of Congress must pass resolutions of disapproval within 30 days after an arms sale is announced. Despite the House rejection, the sale still could be approved if the Senate votes against a similar resolution by Oct. 30.
The Senate is expected to vote on a similar resolution later in the month.
Voting for the resolution to disapprove the sale: Bliley (R), Trible (R), Wolf (R).
Voting against the resolution: Butler (R), Daniel (R), Daniel (D), Parris (R), Robinson (R), Wampler (R).
Not voting: Whitehurst (R).
