Handicapped people in the District and Montgomery County will soon find it easier to locate housing for sale or rent with special features for handicapped persons.

Acting on recommendations from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, the Washington Board of Realtors and the Montgomery County Board of Realtors will include information on special features in their automated multiple listing services.

Possible features include entry ramps to the living level, doorways and hallways at least 32 inches wide for wheelchairs, an elevator, kitchen counters and cabinets no more than 31 inches high, a handicapped-adapted bath, a roll-in shower, and modifications for wheelchairs and people with impaired hearing or vision.

The Washington Board expects the information to be available in January and the Montgomery County Board expects it to be available in late November or early December.

Recommendations leading to the new service were developed by a special task force established by COG's Human Resources Policy Committee in response to the United Nations' designation of 1981 as the International Year of Disabled Persons. The task force is also developing a directory of rental housing with special features for the handicapped. That directory is expected to be available through COG early next year.
