The eighth annual Temporaries Food for Christmas Drive, an effort to provide canned goods for area residents in need of assistance, will be held Dec. 7 through 11. A benefit Christmas ball will be held Dec. 5 to kick off the drive.
Collection points will be set up in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Virginia. Canned goods collected will be distributed to needy residents by Help-Fish groups in Maryland, the Senior Citizens Counseling and Delivery Service in the District, and United Community Ministries in Virginia. Cash contributions also are sought. One hundred percent of all cash donations go directly to buy canned food.
Canned food will be collected at the following Maryland locations from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the week of the drive:
Giant Food, 275 North Washington St., Rockville; Giant Food, Wheaton Plaza, 2800 University Blvd; Giant Food, Laurel Shopping Center, Rte. 198, 1009 Fairlawn St., and Giant Food, Olney Shopping Center, 17821 Georgia Ave.
The first annual benefit Food for Christmas Ball will be held from 7 to 11 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Forrestal Building Annex, 1000 Independence Ave. SW, in the District. It will feature music by WKYS/WRC-AM and Vic Simas and His Big Band, a buffet, silent auction, and door prizes donated by merchants. Tickets, which cost $15 per person, are available at Ticketron outlets.
