Sandra L. Smith, 39, of Northeast Washington died when her 1978 Fiat was struck by a car driven by Bernice Rowe, 37, of Upper Marlboro, police said. Rowe was traveling west in the eastbound lane of Central Avenue in Kettering at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when her 1970 Pontiac collided with Smith's car. Officers said they do not know why Rowe was driving on the wrong side of the road.
Smith was taken to Prince George's General Hospital where she died of massive head and internal injuries at 9:20 p.m., police said. Rowe and her 15-year-old daughter, who was riding with her, were treated at the hospital and released.
In Montgomery County, William R. Haight was killed when his car was struck by a car driven by 26-year-old Steven G. Poyourow of Gaithersburg, which failed to negotiate a curve on Aspen Hill Road about 2 a.m. yesterday. Police said Poyourow's car was eastbound "apparently at a high rate of speed," crossed into the westbound lane and hit Haight's car.
