Scott E. Vajda, 17, an airman recruit at the Millington Naval Air Station at Memphis, Tenn., who was a resident of Gainesville, Va., died Friday at a hospital in Memphis of injuries he received in an car accident earlier that day.
A spokesman for the Memphis police department said that Mr. Vajda was a passenger in a car that ran off I-240 and down a steep enbankment. Police said that the driver of the car was pronounced dead and another passenger was in serious condition in a Memphis hospital, and a fourth passenger was in serious condition at the naval air station's hospital. Police said the investigation is continuing.
Mr. Vajda was a native of Washington. He attended Warrenton Junior High and Fauquier High School in Warrenton, Va. He entered the Navy in September of this year and was transferred to the naval air station in Memphis last month for training in aviation electronics.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Warrenton and a former member of Boy Scout troops in Lanham and Warrenton.
Survivors include his parents, Ernest and Barbara Vajda, and three sisters, Lisa, Susan, and Sharon, all of Gainesville, and his grandmothers, Georgia Pelkey of Bladensburg, and Helen Vajda of Warrenton.
