A man was shot and killed and a woman in her 30s was wounded critically last night in a row house in the Columbia Road NW area, authorities reported.
The incident came to the attention of authorities with a call from a woman who said:"I need an ambulance," and said she had been shot in the head.
Police officers and rescue units were sent to the address the woman gave, 2242 Ontario Rd. NW.
The woman was taken to the Medstar Unit of the Washington Hospital Center, where she was listed in critical condition.
The man found in the two-story brick row house was pronounced dead on the scene.
Neighbors said that a man named Willie Bell had lived in the house for the past several years, but police did not immediately give the name of the dead man.
According to James Figard, lead ambulance dispatcher for the D.C. Fire Department, the woman victim dialed zero to reach a telephone company operator, who transferred the call to him.
He said the woman, whose call he received at 10:26 p.m., told him she had been shot and in answer to his questions gave her address and said she was wounded in the head.
Then, he said, he asked her who had shot her. The woman gave an answer, Figard said, but he was unable to understand what she said.
After the police and rescue personnel arrived last night, neighbors clustered outside the house where the shootings occurred. They said they had heard no shots and had not seen any signs of unusual activity.
