Two Northern Virginia motorists were killed in separate traffic accidents Wednesday night.

A 24-year-old Alexandria man, who was fatally injured at 6:15 p.m. when his car went off the road in the 100 block of Telegraph Road, was identified yesterday as Jose Fuentes of 298 South Whiting St.

Fuentes suffered fatal head injuries when the van he was driving veered off the road, struck a no-parking sign and came to rest in a creek bed, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Fairfax County police said 55-year-old Joseph A. O'Mara of 1202 Kelly St., Vienna, was killed about 7 p.m. when his automobile was struck head-on by another driven by William D. Banta, 53, of Exton, Pa.

O'Mara died from chest and head injuries, according to police. Banta, who was not injured, was charged with drunken driving, police said.

The accident occurred on Electric Avenue just north of Cedar Lane. Officers said Banta's car ran off the right side of the road, then swerved back into the oncoming lane and hit the O'Mara car.

O'Mara's wife, Elizabeth, who was a passenger in the car driven by her husband, was treated at Fairfax Hospital and released.
