Ten persons have been slain in the District in the first eight days of the new year, including three killed in separate incidents here late Thursday and early yesterday.

Shortly after 7 a.m. yesterday, Page Fletcher, 37, of Junington, Md., was shot to death at the corner of 11th Street and New York Avenue NW. Police said Fletcher had been involved in an argument with Lester Lindsey, 28, of First Street NW.

Lindsey was arrested and charged with murder.

Thursday night Calvin Shade, 27, of 42nd Street NE was found shot in the head on the 1200 block of Eaton Road SE, police said. A passerby discovered Shade's body on the sidewalk, they said. No motive was known yesterday for the slaying.

Also Thursday night, residents of an apartment building at 911 6th St. NE found an elderly tenant lying unconscious in a hallway with a gunshot wound. The man was taken to Capitol Hill Hospital, where he later died, authorities said.

Police yesterday declined to release his identity until relatives could be notified. There were no suspects in the slaying.

Arrests have been made in seven of the 10 slayings this year, authorities said. Police Deputy Chief Alphonso D. Gibson, head of criminal investigations, said he was unable to account for the sudden surge of killings.

"We're concerned about it," he said. "But there's not a whole lot you can do to prevent homicides."
