Two men suspected of stealing a clock radio from a People's Drug Store yesterday morning were arrested after a two-mile automobile chase through Northwest Washington that ended with police firing a shot at a suspect, police said.
Shyue-Waei Huang, 21, the assistant manager of the drug store at Connecticut Avenue and McKinley Street NW, said two men took the item from the basement and were leaving through a back door when he tried to stop them. The men said they were armed and threatened to shoot him, although they didn't show a weapon, he said.
Police said they initially received a report of an armed robbery at the store, but no weapons were recovered and no one was injured. Sgt. Sonya Proctor said the shooting was under investigation. A police cruiser's windshield was damaged in the incident, but she said police were not certain how it happened.
The chase ended in the 2700 block of Porter Street NW, where the shot was fired, Proctor said. She said she was unsure why the officer fired. Two suspects, Rodney J. Matthews, 21, of Lanham, and Mitchell J. Bell, 22, of Southeast Washington, were held pending arraignment tomorrow in Superior Court on burglary charges.
