Prince George's County is celebrating Bluebird Week this week with a variety of programs, workshops, exhibits and special events.Events are as follows:

Bluebird trail hikes, Watkins Nature Center, Largo, today and Friday, 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. Reservations required. Call 249-6206.

Bluebird house workshop, Watkins Nature Center, today and Friday, 4 p.m. Reservations are required and there is a $6 fee. Participants are asked to bring a hammer. Call 249-6202.

Bluebird trail hike, Clearwater Nature Center, Clinton, Saturday, 8:30 a.m. Reservation required. Call 297-4565.

Bluebird festival, Woodmore Elementary School, Friday, 9 a.m. Call 249-2142 for information.

Bluebird slide programs and trail hikes, Patuxent River Park, all week long. For information and reservations, call 627-6074.

Bluebird trail hike, Goddard Space Center, March 13, 10:30 a.m. Participants should meet at the visitors center and bring a bag lunch.

The Eastern bluebird has been the county's official bird since 1976. Once common in America, the bird has been threatened in recent decades by lack of nest sites, pesticides, and other causes. The bird has made a comeback, however, because of volunteer individuals and groups who have built, installed and monitored nest boxes
