Prince George's County police yesterday charged a county corrections officer with attempting to murder a fellow guard by poisioning his orange juice.
Olivia D. Vaughns, 22, of 7617 Greenleaf Road, Palmer Park, was charged with attempting to murder Michael S. Sitney, 28, at his home in Adelphi.
Vaughns was being held without bond at the county detention center where she worked as a probationary jail guard. She was fired yesterday, police said.
According to authorities, Sitney and Vaughns got into an argument around 1 a.m. Saturday morning at Sitney's apartment at 1713 Jasmine Terrace.
Police said Vaughns grabbed a butcher knife from the kitchen and threw it at Sitney who retreated to the bedroom where he spent the rest of the night.
In the morning, police said Sitney noticed a funny smell as he drank from a pitcher of orange juice. He found that all the containers of liquid in his refrigerator bore the same smell and that it was similar to the aroma of some "pine cleaner" in his kitchen, police said.
Sitney went to Prince George's Hospital where he was given medication but not hospitalized.
Authorities analyzed the orange juice and found that it had been spiked with isopropyl alcohol. When Vaughns returned to Sitney's apartment Saturday evening, she was escorted to police headquarters in Hyattsville where she was arrested.
