Police yesterday identified the McDonald's restaurant night manager fatally shot during a Tuesday night holdup as George T. Knights, 44, of the 500 block of Gresham Place NW.

Knight's slaying was the second fatal shooting in less than two months at the restaurant at 4301 Nannie Helen Burroughs Ave. NE. On Jan. 19, security guard Michael Crennell, 36, was shot with a sawed-off shotgun carried by one of two gunmen who robbed the store. Crennell had a revolver, but did not draw it.

At about 10:50 p.m. Tuesday, two armed men burst into the restaurant, grabbed a nightstick from an otherwise unarmed security guard and forced him and Knights into the back of the restaurant. One of the assailants held a gun on the other employes and customers while the other forced Knights to open the safe, police said.

Knights was shot once in the back of the head after complying with orders to open the store's safe and handing over a bag containing an undetermined amount of money. Police said some of the money, which was tagged red from an explosive dye in the money bag, was found some distance away from the restaurant.
