Fairfax County motorists have until April 15 to purchase 1982 stickers and display them on the windshields of their vehicles.
In order to obtain a sticker, vehicle owners must show proof that they have paid their 1981 personal property taxes, either in Fairfax County or in another Virginia jurisdiction, if they were state residents and vehicle owners on Jan. 1, 1981.
The county will accept as proof of payment a receipt from the county finance office or a license sticker application form marked "paid" and received in the mail. Canceled checks will not be accepted as proof of payment.
Overdue personal property taxes must be paid before a 1982 sticker can be purchased. Late taxes--subject to a 10 percent penalty plus 10 percent interest--may be paid at the finance office in the Massey Building or at any of the county's six branch assessment offices.
Residents whose vehicles were registered in 1981 should have received license applications in the mail. They can use those applications to purchase the stickers by mail, which the county recommends.
Stickers also may be purchased weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Massey Building, 4100 Chain Bridge Rd., Fairfax; weekdays except Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at branch assessment offices at 6210 North Kings Hwy. in Groveton, 1437 Balls Hill Rd. in McLean, 6121 Franconia Rd. in Franconia. 6507 Columbia Pike in Annandale, 6140 Rolling Rd. in Springfield and 11415 Isaac Newton Square South in Reston.
Stickers also may be purchased weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Post Bldg. 1902, Fort Belvoir, and weekdays from noon to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following fire stations: 8914 Little River Turnpike, Annandale; 3601 Madison La., Baileys Crossroads; 9501 Burke Lake Rd., Burke; 4004 Walney Rd., Chantilly; 2610 Reston Ave., Fox Mill; 6300 Beulah St., Franconia; 7011 Backlick Rd., Springfield; 9916 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls; 3101 Hodge Place, Jefferson; 1440 Old Chain Bridge Rd., McLean; 8739 Lee Hwy., Merrifield; 2701 Sherwood Hall La., Mount Vernon; 1560 Spring Hill Rd., Tysons Corner; and 8701 Lukens La., Woodlawn.
