On election day in many suburban Maryland municipalities yesterday there were some surprises, as in North Brentwood, where a candidate running unopposed for a council seat lost to a write-in and two candidates running for the other available seat tied, 13 to 13.

And in some places the usual happened: Edward Hudgins, 70, was reelected to Cottage City's Town Commission, on which he has served for 30 years.

Following are yesterday's unofficial election results:

Capitol Heights: Mayor Leo P. Forami, Vivian M. Dodson (a newcomer to the council) and five current members (Angelo D. Bruzzese, William L. Carpenter, William A. Devine Sr., John T. Forbes Jr. and Martha A. Taylor) won unopposed.

Cheverly: Susan M. Sokol defeated Joseph Haw in Ward 2; Dorothy McClain and Robert W. Heffron were unopposed in Wards 4 and 5; William J. Whalen got two write-ins.

Colmar Manor: Denver (Sandy) Sanders defeated Larry E. Stovall in Ward 2; George J. Gannon Jr. beat E. Wendell Womboe in Ward 4.

Cottage City: Incumbent Edward Hudgins in Ward 2 was unopposed; Catherine B. Howes beat Jack M. Hays in Ward 3; Bertha Stewart defeated incumbent Audrey L. Bateman in Ward 4.

District Heights: William E. Hay and Edward J. Webb Jr. were unopposed in Wards 1 and 2. Woodrow R. Wilson, a former commissioner, got one write-in vote.

Drummond: Steven Bernstein, Mary K. Davis and Max Goldman were elected to the Village Committee, defeating write-in candidate Nancy Scribner.

Edmonston: Robert W. Thomas Sr. defeated incumbent Gladys Hensley in Ward 1; incumbent Rudolf Geissler lost to James Giannakis in Ward 2.

Fairmount Heights: Arthur Jackson Jr. and incumbents Arthur Fair and Larry Hughes won the three open council seats, beating incumbent Alphonso Hatcher.

Garrett Park: Laura C. (Peggy) Pratt defeated incumbent mayor Donn Mader and another challenger, Mabel N. Peterson. James E. Agenbroad and incumbent David O. Almy won the two council seats, beating Robert M. Masucci Sr.

Laytonsville: Larry L. Barker and incumbent Charles E. MacDonald defeated incumbent Maude D. Burke for Town Council.

Morningside: Incumbents Charles J. Kiker and Phyllis C. Kordek defeated Harry F. Messer and Everett Gatta for Town Council.

New Carrollton: Mayor Jordan L. Harding won a seventh term, defeating William J. McEwen. Incumbents Andrew C. Hanko and Robert E. Martini beat Richard G. Motley for City Council.

North Brentwood: Incumbent Edith L. Davis tied with Petrilla Robinson in Ward 2; Betty Shipp, running unopposed in Ward 3, lost to write-in candidate Rudolph Jones.
