A 27-year-old Mount Rainier man, wanted on a warrant in Anne Arundel County on a series of charges, was shot fatally by an Anne Arundel County police officer early yesterday outside a Laurel shopping mall.
Prince George's County police said the dead man, Kenneth Lee Rahn Jr. of the 3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue, was shot once in the upper torso by Anne Arundel Police Sgt. Dennis O'Toole in the course of the arrest. Rahn was taken to Prince George's General Hospital in Cheverly, where he died at 6:50 a.m., police said.
Prince George's police said O'Toole and Anne Arundel fire investigator George Andreae were driving through a parking lot in the rear of the Town Center shopping mall at Rte. 197 and Contee Road in search of Rahn when the shooting occurred at 12:40 a.m. Police released no other details about the circumstances of the shooting. Police said the officers had warrants for Rahn, issued within the week, charging him with assault, robbery and malicious burning in connection with incidents in Anne Arundel County.
The incident is being investigated by the Prince George's homicide division. A spokesman for the Anne Arundel police said that officers involved in shooting incidents are not required to go on administrative leave and accordingly, no action will be taken pending the outcome of the investigation.
