Alexandria police said yesterday a night clerk at the Quality Intown Motel at 808 N. Washington St. in Old Town was shot in the head during an apparent robbery early Sunday morning.

Siraj Haque, 20, of the 5600 block of Columbia Pike, Falls Church, died in Alexandria Hospital several hours after he was found in the motel office by a newspaper delivery man. A police spokesman said there are no suspects in the shooting.

Motel assistant manager Rick Clark said $201 was taken from a cash drawer. Haque, a Pakistani immigrant studying English at Northern Virginia Community College, apparently was forced into the office restroom and shot, according to police. The assailant ransacked the office, Clark said.

Motel guests apparently heard no gunshot and the office front door was unlocked at the time Haque was discovered. There was no sign of forced entry, police said.

"We don't know why the door was open," Clark said. "The only thing we're thinking is that maybe he went out and got coffee at the hamburger place next door, and then someone ran in behind him when he came back."

Clark said Sunday's incident was the third time in two months that the motel's night clerks have been robbed, first at knifepoint, then by an assailant armed with a sawed-off shotgun. "Things suddenly took off here lately. Now I wouldn't want to work at night," Clark said.
