Washington area police are investigating two deaths over the weekend, and a District man is in critical condition after he allegedly threatened an acquaintance with a machete and was shot by a police officer.
A 31-year-old Bladensburg man was shot and killed in Washington Friday night during an argument with another man over a small sum of money, D.C. homicide detectives said.
The dead man, identified as Nathaniel Haggins, of 3561 55th Ave. in Bladensburg, was found at 5005 Hanna Pl. SE at about 11 p.m. and pronounced dead two hours later at D.C. General Hospital. He suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and a perforated spinal cord.
Police said that shortly after the shooting, they arrested a fleeing suspect near the scene. Douglas M. Young, 28, of the Hanna Place address, was arrested and charged with homicide.
About 15 minutes earlier, District police were called to a disturbance at 337 53rd St. NE, where police said they found Carlos Cheves Snow threatening to use a machete on a man during an argument.
Police said when they ordered Snow to lay down his weapon, he charged them. Lt. James Lingerfelt of the 6th District said Snow swung his weapon at Sgt. Earl Bell, missed, and then bit the sergeant in the forearm.
Lingerfelt said Officer Ron Williams then shot Snow several times to free Bell, who also fired his revolver at Snow.
Although Snow, who police say is about 5 feet 11 inches and weighs 200 pounds, was struck with six or seven bullets, he managed to stay on his feet, police said. He was taken to Washington Hospital Center, where he was listed in critical condition last night.
Bell was treated and released from Washington Hospital.
In another incident, Prince George's County police are investigating the death of a man whose body was discovered yesterday near a roadway in Largo.
A passerby found the body in the 1600 block of Lottsford Road at about 8:30 a.m., according to the county's homicide officials. They say the man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of relatives, apparently was murdered.
The body was found in a grassy area about 20 feet from the road. An autopsy is scheduled.
