The deadline to register for the Sept. 7 primary election in Virginia is 5 p.m. Aug. 7. To register, you must be at least 18 years old and a Virginia resident. Virginia does not register voters by party.

Registration books will remain open past the primary deadline for voters who wish to register for the November general election.

Some jurisdictions will not know until Aug. 6, the deadline for candidates to file, whether they will hold a primary. Those jurisdictions are noted below.

These are the locations and times where voters may register.

Alexandria. Burke Library, 4701 Seminary Rd., and Duncan Library, 2501 Commonwealth Ave., 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, except Aug. 7; Courthouse, 520 King St., Room 302, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Special hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 7 at both libraries and the courthouse.

Arlington. All branch libraries, 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays; central library, 1015 N. Quincy St., 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays; Courthouse, 1400 Courthouse Rd., Room 130, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Special hours: If a primary is scheduled, special hours will be held Aug. 7. The hours and locations: branch libraries, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the central library and the courthouse, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fairfax County. County election board, 4031 University Dr., 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Special hours: 3 to 9 p.m. today and Aug. 4 at all county libraries, except Burke Center, Fair Oaks and Great Falls; 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Aug. 5. at all libraries, except Herndon, Lorton and Carter Glass; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 7 at the election board office and all libraries, except Burke Center, Fair Oaks and Great Falls.
