A 27-year-old man was killed and a woman critically wounded yesterday afternoon when both were beaten and shot in the head in the bedroom of a Southeast Washington apartment, D.C. police reported.

The man, Arthur (Pinky) Walker, was pronounced dead at the scene. His companion, Ronnetta Edmunson, 20, of Congress Street SE, was taken to Greater Southeast Community Hospital, where she was unconscious and in critical condition last night.

Police were called to the first-floor apartment on W Street SE by Walker's nephew, Andy Jordan, 19, who found the victims when he returned from a shopping trip at 3:20 p.m. Walker was lying on the floor near several spent bullet casings and apparently died shortly after Jordan arrived. Edmunson had been beaten and shot once in the head.

Jordan said the apartment manager told him a third party had been in the apartment at 1 p.m., and that later in the afternoon, the manager heard scuffling on the premises.

Walker's mother, Jessie Mae Jordan, of Sixth Street NW, said her son had been shot in the head 15 years ago by an unknown assailant while walking along Sherman Avenue, causing him to lose his speech for several months. He never fully recovered, she said, and held part-time jobs after attending high school.

Police said they have not determined the type of gun used in the shootings or a motive.
