Washington area police were conducting an intensive search of the city and suburbs for a missing year-old girl early this morning after two armed youths forced the child's mother to turn over her car to them and then sped off with the child in the back seat.
The child, who was wearing a blue and white outfit, white sweater, and sneakers, had not been found as of 2 a.m. today, according to Montgomery County police.
They said they were seeking a 1982 black Ford, with Maryland plates GAX 124, which was last seen headed east in the 800 block of University Boulevard East.
Police said the woman, whom they did not identify, was getting out of her car at a Silver Spring apartment complex about 11 p.m. when the two youths, described as between 15 and 17, approached her and demanded her car keys. Police said the woman, who at that time had her back against the car, gave them her keys, and that the youths told her to take the child out of the back seat.
Police said it was unclear why the woman had been unable to retrieve the child, but that the youths then jumped into the car and sped away, with the girl still in the car.
